Nioh 3 Boss Design Was Inspired by Lies of P
Team Ninja Confirms Inspiration Behind Nioh 3 Bosses
Team Ninja has revealed that Nioh 3 bosses were heavily inspired by the 2023 soulslike Lies of P. The studio confirmed this during a recent interview, explaining how outside influences helped shape the game’s combat and encounter design.
Released on February 6, Nioh 3 quickly became one of the highest-rated games of 2026. While its review scores match Nioh 2, the new entry introduces major changes to exploration and combat systems.
Nioh 3 Moves Away From the Old Formula
Unlike previous entries, Nioh 3 drops the traditional mission-based structure. Instead, the game uses large open-world regions that encourage exploration.
Team Ninja also redesigned the Ki system and refined style-switching mechanics. Many Nioh 3 bosses now test players on quick stance changes, parries, and precise timing.
How Lies of P Influenced Yokai Boss Movesets
Director Masaki Fujita praised Lies of P for its balanced combat that blends dodging and guarding. He explained that the game’s creative boss attacks influenced how Yokai enemies behave in Nioh 3.
According to Fujita, Lies of P bosses fully embraced their unique designs. That philosophy inspired Team Ninja to build more dynamic attack patterns for Nioh 3 bosses.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Also Played a Role
Team Ninja did not only look outside the studio. Fujita said Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty helped the team rethink itemization and loot systems.
Players felt Wo Long included too much complex gear management. As a result, Nioh 3 focuses on clearer progression and fewer unnecessary menus. Feedback about Wo Long’s story also encouraged the team to strengthen character relationships in Nioh 3.
Rise of the Ronin Shaped the Open-World Approach
Another internal influence came from Rise of the Ronin. Players wanted richer exploration and more meaningful side quests.Team Ninja used that feedback to better structure Nioh 3’s world design. The studio aimed to create optional content that feels rewarding without overwhelming players.
Nioh 3 Boss Design Reflects a Blend of Influences
By combining lessons from Lies of P, Wo Long, and Rise of the Ronin, Team Ninja created a fresh approach to boss encounters. The result is a faster, more strategic combat style that challenges players to adapt constantly. If early reviews are any indication, Nioh 3 bosses could become some of the most memorable fights in the series.
