Micron Shifts Away From Consumer RAM and SSD Products
The global RAM shortage is entering a more serious phase. Micron has announced that it is ending its Crucial brand of consumer RAM and SSD devices. The company will now focus only on AI and enterprise-level customers.
This change will not be immediate. Micron confirmed that the transition will happen over the next few months. The decision arrives during a period when PC gamers are already struggling with rising RAM prices and limited stock.
RAM Prices Have Skyrocketed Since October
The market has been hit hard by supply shifts. OpenAI’s expansion of its global AI server operations has increased pressure on RAM manufacturers. Many companies redirected a large part of their production to AI clients.
As a result, consumer supply became tight. DDR4 and DDR5 RAM prices have surged since October. Kits that sold for under $100 earlier in 2025 now cost nearly triple that amount. The Micron RAM shortage will only deepen this problem.
Crucial Comes to an End After 29 Years
Micron’s decision will end Crucial’s 29-year presence in the consumer PC market. The company announced that Crucial RAM and SSDs will no longer be produced after February 2026. Retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and Newegg will sell the remaining stock until it runs out.
Micron stated that warranty support will continue for existing Crucial products. However, it did not clarify how long that support will remain active.
Micron Is Not Shutting Down Its Business
Micron is not closing its operations. Instead, it is shifting its entire focus toward AI technologies and enterprise clients. The company cited rapid growth in data centers and AI servers as the main reason for this strategic move.
Micron also mentioned that it will reduce the negative impact on its employees and offer redeployment opportunities. The shift ensures Micron can support its long-term supply needs for enterprise products.
The Decision Comes at the Worst Time for Gamers
The Micron RAM shortage now leaves consumers with fewer options. Crucial has been one of the largest and most trusted RAM and SSD brands. Its exit means fewer choices and higher prices in the short term.
This shortage is affecting more than just PC users. The upcoming Steam Machine has not revealed a final price yet. Valve confirmed that it will not be subsidized. Because RAM prices continue to rise, the final cost may be higher than expected once it launches in 2026.
Consoles May Also Face Price Increases
The RAM shortage could push Microsoft into making another price increase on Xbox consoles. Microsoft has already raised prices twice in 2025. Reports suggest the company did not prepare for the current shortage. As a result, Xbox Series X and Series S prices may climb again in 2026.
Sony is not expected to raise PS5 prices soon. Still, the loss of Crucial and the shrinking RAM supply will affect the entire gaming and tech sector.

It’s unfortunate to see Crucial go, especially with the current RAM shortage. This will undoubtedly make it even harder for gamers to get decent deals without breaking the bank. Hopefully, we see more competition in the market to balance things out.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! The timing of Crucial’s exit really couldn’t be worse. With RAM prices already out of control, losing a major competitor will hit gamers hard. Hopefully, other brands step in to fill the gap soon.
