New PS5 December Update Brings Stability Improvements
New PS5 System Update Rolled Out for December 2025
PlayStation has started rolling out a brand-new firmware update for the PS5 and PS5 Pro. The update focuses on stability improvements and system performance. This is a common approach for Sony, especially when preparing consoles for bigger patches later.
PS5 Continues Its Strong Sales Momentum
The PS5 has sold over 80 million units since its launch in 2020. Sony revealed this milestone in its latest financial report. The number brings the console closer to matching the PS3’s lifetime sales. The PS5 also saw higher year-over-year sales in 2025, passing 2.5 million units already. However, it still trails far behind the legendary PS2’s 160 million mark.
What the December 2025 PS5 Update Includes
Sony has pushed the update labeled 25.08-12.40.00. It is a standard stability update with no major features. PlayStation says it improves messages and usability across some screens. Performance and system stability have also been enhanced. Players are unlikely to notice major changes after installing it.
A Look Back at Recent Feature Updates
While today’s update is small, November did bring useful additions. Sony added seasonal themes to the Welcome Hub. A new widget also tracks hours played, sessions, trophies, and more. The Welcome Hub launched in 2024 as a customizable space for players.
Fans Still Want Full System Themes
Players continue to ask for classic PS3 and PS4-style themes. Sony added temporary PS1 anniversary themes earlier this year. Fans demanded their return, and Sony brought them back permanently in April. Sadly, iconic PS1 startup sounds did not return with them.
