Rockstar Games Facing Legal Claims After Firing GTA 6 Developers
Trade Union Files Legal Complaint Against Rockstar
Rockstar Games is under fire after the Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB) filed legal claims against the company on November 12. The claims come in response to the firing of 31 developers who were working on Grand Theft Auto 6.
According to the IWGB, the firings were not about leaks as Rockstar stated, but rather retaliation against unionization efforts. The union is now seeking monetary compensation and legal relief for the dismissed developers.
Rockstar Games Fired 31 GTA 6 Developers in Late October
The controversy began on October 30, when Rockstar let go of 31 staff members from the GTA 6 development team. Shortly afterward, the company confirmed that the launch of GTA 6 was delayed from May 2026 to November 19, 2026 — a six-month delay.
Rockstar claimed the postponement was due to polishing and optimization needs. However, critics and some former employees believe the internal tension and firings may have played a larger role.
IWGB Challenges Rockstar’s Official Explanation
In its filing, the IWGB trade union rejected Rockstar’s justification that the firings were due to leaks. IWGB President Alex Marshall said the union would mount a “full legal defense” on behalf of the fired staff. He added that barristers, legal officers, and caseworkers were already preparing evidence to challenge Rockstar’s actions. As of now, Rockstar has not responded to IWGB’s request for a meeting.
GTA 6 Delay and Protests Outside Take-Two’s London Office
The firing controversy has fueled ongoing protests outside Take-Two House in London, where demonstrators have gathered to voice their support for the affected employees.
Rockstar maintains that the GTA 6 delay was unrelated to the layoffs, though skepticism within the gaming community continues to rise.
The union’s decision to proceed with formal legal action could have significant implications for labor rights in the gaming industry, especially in the UK.
Uncertain Future for Rockstar and GTA 6
As the legal dispute unfolds, Rockstar Games faces increasing pressure to address transparency and workplace culture concerns.
Meanwhile, fans eagerly await updates on GTA 6, which remains one of the most anticipated games in history. Despite setbacks, Rockstar insists that the additional time will ensure a polished and groundbreaking release.
Only time will tell how these legal claims will affect the studio’s reputation — and whether the GTA 6 team can fully recover from the controversy.
