Ubisoft Explains Why Star Wars Outlaws Flopped Financially

Ubisoft has shared why its 2024 title, Star Wars Outlaws, failed to meet expectations. The company admitted that the game was a financial flop, despite being based on one of the most recognizable IPs in the world.

This flop contributed heavily to Ubisoft’s poor financial report last year. Though not the only title to underperform, the company had high hopes for Star Wars Outlaws and expected much better returns.

At launch, the game received a Top Critic Average of 75 on OpenCritic. While reviews weren’t negative, they weren’t enough to convince many Star Wars fans to buy in immediately.

Ubisoft CEO: “We Didn’t Reach Sales Targets”

During a recent shareholder meeting, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot addressed questions about the game’s disappointing sales.

He confirmed, “For Star Wars Outlaws, we didn’t reach our sales targets.”

Guillemot also offered key reasons for the flop:

“The game suffered from a number of items. First, it suffered from the fact that it was released at a time when the brand, the brand that it belonged to was in a bit of choppy waters. And the game had a few items that still needed to be polished, and they were polished and debugged in the early weeks, but it did affect sales volumes.”

Ubisoft Points to Star Wars Brand Fatigue

Ubisoft appears to believe that part of the issue lies with the current state of the Star Wars brand itself.

Disney’s handling of the franchise has been divisive, especially the sequel trilogy. Fans have criticized recent content for focusing on quantity over quality, which may have reduced excitement around Star Wars Outlaws.

A Second Chance on Nintendo Switch 2

Despite weak early sales, Ubisoft isn’t giving up on the game. Star Wars Outlaws will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 in September 2025.

On existing platforms, the game has received frequent updates, making it more stable and polished than it was at launch.

Ubisoft hopes that a better experience and a new console audience could revive interest in this ambitious Star Wars adventure.
